Good quality timber, especially softwoods, when treated in the correct manner, should last many years in an outdoor situation.
Timber in contact with the soil will stay wet for most of the year, so it is important that fence posts and all outdoor timber should be adequately treated to extend the life of the timber.
The Romans were recorded as having used olive oil on timber to create a waterproof barrier and even Noah used pitch to waterproof the ark.

All our timber that we use in the field or garden is pressure treated to the required high standards. Pressure treated timber is used throughout the world to give a high standard of protection  for outdoor and contructional use.  Basically, the treatment involves placing the timber into a tank and  applying a vacuum to evacuate air from the timber cells. Preservative is flooded into the tank and forced deep within the structure of the timber.
